Organic Vs. Industrial
Exhibition Text
This piece was meant to portray females in a body-positive light. Beyond presenting my sculpture as an industrially made organic being, my piece is designed to emphasize humans, specifically females, as sources of light in American culture. The different body types I utilized were meant to focus on body diversity and the beauty behind it.
Meaning Behind Piece
My piece addresses a personal issue that has to do with self esteem and body image. American women are always under pressure to be externally beautiful and to appear desirable. The ideal image that media and pop culture typically present is that of a thin woman and this causes other females to push toward becoming that image in order to appear desirable and redeemable. Women who do not fit into this societal mold of conventional beauty standards can often suffer self esteem issues that leads to lack of confidence and lack of "light".
Through my piece, I wish to counter that societal notion that larger female bodies are perceived as inferior to thin bodies. I believe that all body types are equally beautiful and special, but I also believe that more important than body is soul. The human soul aspect of my piece is represented by the light bulbs, silver coating, and pieces of CD that I arranged on the bodies.
All humans can be sources of light if they present the positive contents of their being despite having body types that are perceived unideal by their society.
